What is a natural and non-toxic mattress?

A non-toxic mattress is one that was created without the use of toxic chemicals that could be damaging to the environment, the individuals who made it, and the people who use it. There are affordable non-toxic mattresses available, despite the fact that the majority of mattresses created today use petrochemicals, chemical adhesives, chemical dyes, and flame retardants with known toxicity. However, evaluating brands is not a simple operation. Real non-toxic mattresses will be made of natural materials, have third-party certifications that screen and test for the presence of known toxic chemicals and dangerous chemical emissions, and be Global Organic Textile Standard certified as organic. A non-toxic mattress won't ever contain polyurethane foams, memory foams, flame retardants, or fire socks, and it won't be glued to keep its shape; instead, it will be needle-tufted or wrapped in a cotton sleeve.

Polyurethane foam health risks from petrochemicals

Do you get sick from your mattress? According to studies, indoor air pollution might differ significantly from outdoor air pollution. That's because memory foam and polyurethane foams with petroleum origins make up the majority of mattresses. These are frequently used with chemical adhesives and flame retardants, which when used together can produce volatile organic compounds and chemical scents (a process known as "off-gassing") (VOCs). This over time may lead to poor indoor air quality and have negative effects on one's physical and me

Pesticides, insecticides and toxic chemicals

According to research, even a small amount of contact with pesticides and herbicides can raise a person's risk of developing cancer. Uninformed buyers may encounter unforeseen concerns even in "natural" mattresses. One of the most contaminated crops in the world, for instance, is conventional cotton. Conventional wool, which can be treated and cleaned with a wide range of harsh and toxic chemicals, or wool blended with flame retardant fibers, may be used in the comfort layers. Additionally, typical latex foam layers are created from trees that were grown using pesticides and insecticides and then processed using a number of hazardous chemicals. On a mattress' legal label, none of this is mentioned.

Claims that are misleading and greenwashed

The UBA give environmental claims a clear standard. Marketing professionals who assert that their product is non-toxic must provide competent and trustworthy scientific proof of the product's environmental and human safety. Too many manufacturers, however, imply through their claims and the use of certification marks that their mattresses are safe, healthy, and eco-friendly just because they contain natural materials. Seals and certifications for particular materials might be deceptive.

Organic GOTS and GOLS Standards

The highest point of all PHYSICAL STANDARD

The IFOAM and EC both acknowledge the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) as the top organic standard in the world. It guarantees organic production practices from the farm to the completed good. It is the best organic standard, but when used to take toxicity into account, it can be perplexing. This is due to the fact that GOTS does not only apply to the finished product but also to the manufacturer or a specific material. When in doubt, seek up brands in the GOTS public database. The mattress is not certified if it is not mentioned next to the brand as a finished product. GOLS is also crucial, but it only applies to latex. We are utilizing GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex.
